VIDEO: Japanese Player Hitting Inside-the-Park HR in Empty Stadium is Strange to See
By Michael Luciano
The COVID-19 outbreak sweeping the globe has led to most major sports leagues, including the MLB, either cancelling or postponing their seasons or tournaments. However, some leagues are playing games with no fans in attendance. The Japanese Nippon Professional Baseball league is still in the middle of their Spring Training, though this game between the Hiroshima Toyo Carp and the Fukuoka SoftBank Hawks is being played in an empty stadium. Hawks speedster Ukyo Shuto managed to race around the bases for an inside-the-park home run, but this incredibly rare feat didn't feel as epic as it normally would due to the lack of applause and excitement.
Given how hard East Asia has been hit by the virus, Japan is being extra cautions with combating this disease.
While Spring Training games are still being played, the NPB has postponed the start of their regular season, a decision that commissioner Atsushi Saito called "unavoidable." As of this writing, Japan has 646 active COVID-19 cases, with 24 deaths.
The coronavirus issue has sports on hold not just in America, but all over the world. All we can do is take proper precautions and hope that the virus' impact diminishes sooner rather than later.
