Jarvis Landry Wants Browns to Force Odell Beckham Jr the Ball Which Would Be Absolutely Disastrous
By Scott Rogust
Through the first five games of the season, the much-hyped Cleveland Browns offense has been anemic. The offensive line is the epitome of a subway turnstile, quarterback Baker Mayfield is struggling, and the play-calling of head coach Freddie Kitchens has been highly questionable.
Wide receiver Jarvis Landry has a solution to their offensive woes, and that's to force feed the ball to teammate and friend Odell Beckham Jr.
"I’m not calling plays or designing anything,’’ said Landry on Thursday, via Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. “But at the end of the day, obviously he’s a key part of our offense whether the ball’s in his hands or not. The way that it’s been going, we haven’t really been making enough plays without him touching the ball.
“So we've definitely got to find a way to include him even more in the offense and be intentional with it. It doesn't matter if the defense knows it. We've got to be intentional with getting him the ball. Getting playmakers the ball, period."
While the whole "feed the playmakers" theory carries some weight, it simply won't work for the Browns.
Yes, Beckham has an extraordinary skill-set. However, that means the opposing defense will double-cover Beckham as a result. If Kitchens' play calls are to target Beckham a number of times in a game, that means there's a high likelihood Mayfield will be throwing into double coverage.
That was evidenced in Week 1 when Cleveland opened the season against the Tennessee Titans.
On paper, targeting Odell Beckham Jr. about ten times a game is a good idea. But with the deficiencies on the offensive line and the lackluster play calling from the coaching staff, the Cleveland Browns would be doing more harm than good.
