Jason Varitek Now Betting Favorite for Red Sox Managerial Job
By Jerry Trotta
The Boston Red Sox are still awaiting the MLB's impending punishment for Alex Cora, and most would say they acted wisely (which isn't saying much) in relieving him of his managerial duties before the likely bombshell is disclosed.
Now, the organization has their hands tied in pursuing a new skipper with Spring Training looming.
Several names have been rumored with the vacancy, including Jason Varitek. In fact, the former Red Sox catcher is now the betting favorite to land the job.
How are we feeling about these odds, Beantown natives?
Varitek, of course, is a Red Sox favorite as he spent his entire 15-year career with the franchise. The two-time World Series champ was named the club's fourth captain, and though he has no previous managing experience, he has served as a Special Assistant to the President of Baseball Operations in Boston for several seasons.
Additionally, Varitek is adored by the fan base and well-respected in the baseball community as a whole.
It's worth noting that these odds could mean nothing, and Varitek may not be a viable long-term replacement, but, like we said, it might be worth rolling the dice on the former three-time All-Star after the events that have unfolded this week.
