Jason Varitek's Wife Throws Cold Water on Rumor He Might Be Named Red Sox Bench Coach
By Michael Luciano
Now that Alex Cora has been let go as Red Sox manager and Ron Roenicke has been named as his interim replacement, there is an opening at bench coach that Red Sox fans want legendary catcher Jason Varitek to fill.
While Varitek is once again a constant presence at Red Sox camp and has been a potential coaching candidate since the day he retired, his wife Catherine was here to finally shut down all the rumors and confirm that Varitek is unlikely to coach with Boston this season.
Either she's saving face after their family secret was discovered, or this is over. Not yet, folks.
Varitek was behind the plate for 15 seasons in Boston, serving a good deal of those years as the team's captain. A three-time All-Star who won two championships with the Red Sox, there are few people that the Boston fans and players would have more respect for when he walks in that clubhouse door than Varitek.
Since he retired, Varitek has served as a special advisor to the GM. As awesome as it would have been for Red Sox fans to see Varitek in the dugout again as a replacement for either Cora or Roenicke, he seems more than happy to stay an advisor to the team.
The ground Varitek walks on is worshiped in Boston, but it appears that No. 33 isn't ready to rejoin the Red Sox in an on-field capacity anytime soon.
