Javier Baez's Reps Expected to Talk Contract Extension With Cubs at Winter Meetings
By Jerry Trotta
If previous reports have told us anything, it's that the Chicago Cubs are making one thing a priority this offseason, and that is coming to an agreement on a monster contract extension with Javier Baez.
Well, MLB insider Jon Heyman understands that the Cubbies braintrust and El Mago's representatives are expected to discuss terms of a potential deal at the winter meetings.
However, locking Baez down for the foreseeable future will come at a cost, as one of their undisclosed other core pieces -- perhaps Kris Bryant, Anthony Rizzo, or Willson Contreras -- might have to be offloaded to create the necessary cap space.
If the overhaul Chicago's coaching staff has undergone this offseason taught us anything, it's that the Cubs brass will be looking to make changes to the roster.
Contreras is reportedly being actively shopped this winter, but Bryant is another name to keep in mind as he has previously popped up on the rumor mill. Keep in mind that the former NL MVP reportedly turned down a massive $200 million contract last summer.
The contracts of Bryant, Baez, Rizzo, and Kyle Schwarber are all set to expire after the 2021 season, so make of that what you will.
It's likely Theo Epstein and Baez's reps will have to first come to a settlement on his worth before they dabble in trade talks with one of their other stars.
The winter meetings are set to conclude on Dec. 12, so we can expect more news regarding Baez's extension around then. Stay tuned for updates.
