VIDEO: Javy Baez Throwing on the Gear and Catching Jose Berrios in Quarantine is Wild
By Michael Luciano
Chicago Cubs infielder Javier Baez is clearly itching for the coronavirus pandemic to subside and baseball to return. He's even taken some pretty drastic measures to get his fix of the national pastime, as he's resorted to catching 95 MPH heaters. Baez donned a catcher's mask and chest protector and caught some simulated action from Minnesota Twins All-Star starter Jose Berrios.
It isn't easy to catch that nasty slurve, so Baez should get his props for handling himself well behind the plate.
Before everyone starts freaking about about how they are disobeying social distancing regulations, the pair have ben quarantining together in Puerto Rico. Baez's wife Irmarie is the sister of Berrios' wife Janneliz.
For someone who plays exclusively in the infield, Baez seems like quite the natural behind the plate, even if he is sure to get a call from Cubs executives telling him to knock that off in a few hours.
If Willson Contreras, Victor Caratini and Kyle Schwarber all spontaneously combust and the Cubs are left without a catcher, it looks they've found an ideal fourth-string backstop who just happens to be an All-Star infielder.
