JD Martinez's Latest Comments Make it Seem Like He's Definitely Opting Out of Red Sox Contract
By Scott Rogust
One year after winning their ninth World Series in franchise history, the Boston Red Sox were ousted from playoff contention in mid-September. After team president Dave Dombrowski was shown the door and reports of a potential offseason Mookie Betts trade emerged again, things couldn't possibly get any worse for Red Sox fans...right?
Well...there is that other guy...
Boston Globe reporter Pete Abraham spoke to JD Martinez about his current contract status, and potentially joining his fourth team in a five-year span, the likely result of an opt-out this winter. Martinez's response...did not seem to be one of trepidation about being on the move again.
Oh, he trusts fully in Scott Boras and doesn't seem to have anything tying him to Boston? Great news.
Martinez knows about free agency all too well. After a long wait in 2018, the slugger signed a five-year, $110 million contract with the Red Sox, but it came with a catch. After the 2019 season, Martinez has an opt-out clause, featuring a $2.5 million buyout.
From the sounds of Martinez's answer, it sure does seem like he's ready to opt out of Boston. He's got his World Series ring, and now has the chance to cash in on one final lucrative contract.
This season, Martinez recorded a .305 batting average, .383 on-base percentage, and .559 slugging percentage, along with 36 home runs and 105 RBI. It felt like a down year only because his 2018 was so otherworldly.
The Boston Red Sox are on pace to undergo a massive turnover this winter, and it could start with JD Martinez's exit. He's a DH, at this juncture, so his market is halved, but there are plenty of AL teams that can use this ridiculous bat. Stay tuned.
