By Sean Facey

Sorry Chicago Cubs fans, but the star-studded core of this team probably won't be taking the diamond for years to come.
General manager Jed Hoyer pretty much guaranteed that some of the team's key stars will be moving on soon after he said the Cubs are "past the point" of being able to extend most or all of their core contributors.

You better enjoy the 2020 season, Cubs fans!
Guys like Javier Baez and Kris Bryant are heading into their latter years of arbitration, and considering the level at which they've played over the past few years, the Cubs just can't feasibly afford to keep them both. That's especially true in wake of their self-imposed spending restrictions.
Interesting deals to avoid arb in the MLB today: Javier Baez (10m) Cubs, Gary Sanchez (5m) Yankees, Francisco Lindor (17.5m) Indians, Trevor Bauer (17.5m) Reds, Noah Syndergaard (9.7m) Mets, Kris Bryant (18.6m) Cubs, Jackie Bradley Jr. (11m) Red Sox and Mookie Betts (27m) Red Sox pic.twitter.com/pGbMazSu5X

This is the nature of home-grown cores. They're affordable for the first few years, and then suddenly the team has to find hundreds of millions of dollars to spend if they want to keep them.
The Cubs didn't jump into the extension game early enough with their stars, and now they're paying the price for it.
