Jerry Jones Has Amazing Phone Conversation With Neville Gallimore When Cowboys Drafted Him
By Jerry Trotta
The Dallas Cowboys continued to bolster their defense when they drafted Oklahoma defensive tackle Neville Gallimore in the third round (No. 82 overall) of the NFL Draft. This was a great value pick for Dallas as a lot of draft boards had the former Sooner rated as a second-round prospect.
It goes without saying that this will go down as an unforgettable moment for Gallimore, However, we don't necessarily say that because his dream of becoming an NFL player has been realized. Rather, it will be because of the bizarre phone call he shared with Cowboys owner Jerry Jones.
Talk about welcoming a draftee to the franchise, Mr. Jones.
Gallimore's family was likely going nuts after he was drafted, and Jones deserves credit for poking fun at the situation and then following the joke up with a perfect response to the Oklahoma product's apology.
You can almost picture the wariness in Gallimore's voice, and the 77-year-old billionaire did tremendously to quell those nerves.
Back to the football side of things, the 6-2, 304-pounder gives the Cowboys a needed young playmaker on an otherwise veteran defensive line. He ran a mind-boggling 4.79 40-yard dash at the Combine and finished his Sooners career with 147 tackles (17.5 for loss) and 8.5 sacks.
The pressure will be on for Gallimore to produce as a rookie, and it's fair to say that Jones lessened that burden with his unorthodox welcome.
