Jerry Jones' Silence on Racial Injustice When it Matters Most Speaks Volumes
By Michael Luciano
The Dallas Cowboys, like many NFL teams, have put out statements to show they support racial equality as protests around the country continue, but owner Jerry Jones has remained tight-lipped on the whole issue, a rarity for someone who likes to hear himself talk as much as he does.
Jones' silence is even starting to get some of his players irritated, as Cowboys defensive lineman Gerald McCoy called on Jones to say something instead of sitting around doing nothing.
While Jones did join his players on the field in a team-wide kneeling protest during a 2017 Monday Night Football game against the Arizona Cardinals, Jones has done little of anything to support racial equality movements verbally or financially.
The owner and GM of the most recognizable franchise in the country's biggest sport making a very public display of support for those fighting for racial justice would send shockwaves through the NFL. Instead, Jones is sitting on the sidelines, allowing this golden opportunity to pass him by.
Jones and the Cowboys can send out all the short PR statements they want about how they support the various movements springing up in this country, but these protests have crystallized the notion that talk without action is exceedingly hollow.
