Jets Cornerback Trumaine Johnson Sidelined Indefinitely After Suffering Hamstring Injury
By Karl Rasmussen
The New York Jets were already lacking in terms of talent at the cornerback position, but things just got a whole lot worse in East Rutherford.
Last offseason's marquee signing Trumaine Johnson reportedly suffered a hamstring injury at practice on Sunday, and it seems as if it's a pretty serious ailment.
The Jets didn't offer a timetable for Johnson's return to the fray, outside of saying that he'll be sidelined indefinitely.
The injury to Johnson leaves the Jets incredibly thin in their secondary, which may force them to start undrafted rookie Kyron Brown at cornerback. Other viable options to replace Johnson as the starter include Brian Poole, Parry Nickerson, and Derrick Jones, while Darryl Roberts is projected to start on the opposite side.
Johnson joined the Jets on a massive five-year, $72 million deal during the 2018 offseason, but was labeled a major disappointment in his first season with the squad.
He played in 10 games last season, recording four interceptions and 40 tackles. While he was able to come away with a solid amount of interceptions, he was often a liability in coverage, and his production didn't match his lofty price tag.
The latest injury to the 29-year-old could prove incredibly costly for the Jets, as his absence may leave them with the worst group of cornerbacks in the sport.
