Jets Drama Proves Steelers Got it Right With Le'Veon Bell
By Mark Powell
Say what you want about the Steelers organization, they often get the timing right in terms of letting a player walk.
As it pertains to Le'Veon Bell and Antonio Brown, the Steelers made the right call. Brown's case was slightly more complicated due to the simple fact he demanded a trade away. However, Bell is a perfect example of understanding the culture you've created.
Bell is by no means a bad person, or even a headcase. He does, however, bring unnecessary drama upon himself, seen many times last season as the Steelers made several attempts to sign him under the franchise tag. Bell didn't make up his mind, inevitably deciding to take the season off and prepare for his free agency.
Rather than dedicate a large sum of money to a position with a short shelf-life, the Steelers invested in their draft picks and defense, which has led them to the cusp of playoff contention despite numerous injuries, including to Ben Roethlisberger.
The Jets, meanwhile, sit far on the outside looking in. Bell is in a terrible spot because he chased the money, which no one can blame him for. Because Bell's shelf life is so short, a move to New York made sense. However, the Jets' progress in what should've been a more committed rebuild doesn't match up to Bell's prime years.
Instead, he's wasting away on a team years from contention, watching his former team thrive in part because they allocated his money appropriately.
