Jets Hire D'Brickashaw Ferguson and Hines Ward as Camp Interns
By Ryan Giglio
Training camp begins across the NFL this week, with New York Jets veterans reporting on Wednesday. While fans will be exited to see promising young quarterback Sam Darnold and free agent signee Le'Veon Bell during the first practice on Thursday, there are exciting names joining the team's coaching staff this week.
Former Jets standouts D’Brickashaw Ferguson and Calvin Pace join Steelers’ great Hines Ward as the team's newest camp interns. Ferguson and Pace will serve as the team's Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellowship participants while Ward is among former Jet receiver David Clowney IV, Stephen Bravo-Brown and Damon Reginald Wilson as Bill Walsh's coaching interns.
The Nunn-Wooten Scouting Fellowship, created by the NFL in 2015, exposes former players to a career in professional scouting and gives them a unique glimpse into player personnel. The Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship, in place for 30 years, drives to use NFL clubs’ training camps, offseason workout programs and minicamps to give talented coaches opportunities to get a foot in the door and gain experience.
The Jets drafted Ferguson fourth overall from Virginia in the 2006 NFL Draft. The three-time Pro Bowler never missed a start in his 10-year career, all with the Jets. His 167 consecutive starts are second in franchise history. Pace came to the Jets after five years in Arizona in 2008 and his 46 sacks and 16 forced fumbles rank fifth and third, respectively, in Jets history.
Ward is a two-time Super Bowl champion, playing all 15 years of his career with the Steelers. Ward leads the franchise in receptions (1,000), receiving yards (12,083) and touchdown catches (85), so he certainly doesn't lack experience.
