NFL Insider Reveals Jamal Adams' Preferred Destination in Potential Trade
By Scott Rogust
There's a lot of confusion out of Florham Park, NJ in regards to the status of New York Jets safety Jamal Adams. Reports indicated that contract talks between both parties reached an impasse, which in turn fueled trade rumors. Even though the Jets have no desire to move on from their franchise safety, Adams has a preferred destination if he tries to force his way out.
According to Yahoo! Sports NFL insider Charles Robinson, if Adams had the choice to be traded, he'd want to play for the Dallas Cowboys.
Slow your roll, Cowboys Nation. Adams isn't going to join your squad anytime soon because of the impending hurdles.
Robinson states that Dallas has yet to contact the Jets about a possible trade for Adams, despite the insistence from "insider" and Cowboys homer Michael Irvin. Secondly, Adams wants a contract that would make him the highest-paid safety in the league (around $15 million annually), which the Jets have insisted they'd give him in 2021. The Cowboys wouldn't be able to give him his desired deal right now because of one person: quarterback Dak Prescott.
As you all know, Prescott is currently in the midst of contentious contract negotiations with the Cowboys. His demands are high, and owner Jerry Jones won't budge (yet). Oh, and Prescott''s currently on the franchise tag, so he would be on the books for $31.4 million against the cap in 2020 if the two sides can't reach an agreement by the July 15 deadline.
The only way the Cowboys would be to accomplish the trade and lock in Adams is if they sign Prescott to a contract extension, which could free up cap space.
Again, this is all hypothetical, because Jets general manager Joe Douglas has no desire to trade Adams at this point. However, Adams is still harboring hard feelings after the Jets shopped him at last season's trade deadline. Adams wants to be paid and feel wanted by the Jets, but he's going to have to wait until next year for that to happen.
As for you Cowboys fans, you can keep dreaming about a trade, because it's probably not happening.
