Jets Pursuing Peyton Manning as Next GM Might Be Their Worst Idea Ever
By Jerry Trotta
It was reported on late Friday night that the New York Jets were targeting legendary NFL quarterback Peyton Manning to fill a key front-office role within the organization. It's now being stated its to be their next GM. What in the world?
Of course, Adam Gase and Peyton know each other from their time in Denver from 2012-2014, when Gase served as the Broncos offensive coordinator during Manning's historic MVP season in 2013.
Regardless, the transition from Hall-of-Fame quarterback to front office executive is NEVER a seamless one. In fact, the only likelihood of success is destined to occur within the first couple years in the role. Just ask John Elway.
The idea of Manning taking over as GM is simply ludicrous. For starters, hiring a first-time exec who spent three years as Gase's "student" would essentially mean Gase would be calling the majority of hte shots in terms of building the roster. When has that EVER worked out in professional sports?
Additionally, do the Jets really want a man who led the Dolphins to a 23-25 record over three seasons calling the bulk of the decisions for their organization?
We aren't the Jets, but we sure know what the answer should be.
And then there's the beloved national treasure that is Peyton. Who is to say that he is up for such a demanding task?
Why would Manning risk tarnishing his Hall-of-Fame reputation by walking into the discombobulated mess that is the Jets' front office? It would be premature and shambolic on both ends. A recipe for unmitigated disaster.
