Jeurys Familia Hits IL With Shoulder Issue in Mets Roster Shakeup
The New York Mets announced Tuesday that setup man Jeurys Familia is returning to the IL with a Bennet lesion in his right shoulder.
This is Familia's second trip to the 10-day IL this season as a result of his right shoulder, with the first being in early May. The veteran reliever has struggled mightily, posting a 7.81 ERA in 29 appearances just a few months removed from signing a three year, $30 million deal with the team in the offseason.
The Familia injury jump-started a number of pitching moves by the Mets, as they sent RHP Drew Gagnon down to Triple-A, and called up RHP Stephen Nogosek and LHP Daniel Zamora from the same level.
In 20 innings of work for the Mets this season, Gagnon allowed 26 hits and 18 runs for an unimpressive 7.65 ERA. Familia and Gagnon have both contributed to a Mets bullpen that ranks 28th in the MLB in ERA at 5.39.
Zamora has allowed 8 hits and recorded a 6.00 ERA in six innings of work at the MLB level. As for Nogosek, he'll be making his Major League debut after posting a 0.57 ERA and 35 strikeouts between both Double and Triple-A this season.
The team is hoping these two new faces can rejuvenate one of the worst bullpens in the league this year.
