Joe Kelly Slams Rockies' Official Scorer With NSFW Insult and Claims He Was High
By Karl Rasmussen
Virtually every Dodgers pitcher has had a rough go of things during their series with the Rockies. LA has surrendered 21 runs through the first two games of the four-game set, and no man has been safe, as both starters and relievers have been shelled at Coors Field.
Joe Kelly wasn't able to escape that fate during Friday evening's clash, surrendering 5 hits and 1 earned run in one inning of work. But, when asked about his line after the game, Kelly asserted that the Rockies' scorer inaccurately charged him with the five hits, claiming that the scorer "could be (expletive) high."
Granted, Kelly does have a fair point. The defense behind him in the inning was absolutely horrendous, and it's certainly arguable that at least one or two more of the hits could have been ruled as errors. The Dodgers committed three errors in the inning, but made as many as five or six terrible defensive plays.
Still, Kelly himself committed one of the egregious throwing errors, and he certainly wasn't keeping the ball out of play, failing to strikeout a single batter in the game.
To assert that, because the game was in Denver, that the official scorer was high is going a bit overboard. Kelly didn't have a solid outing, and rather than worrying about what the stat sheet says, he should probably be focused on getting the job done on the mound, which has proven difficult for him this season.
The flamethrower has an ugly 6.26 ERA and 1.76 WHIP, and in 27 games for the Dodgers has surrendered as many home runs (4) as he did across 73 appearances last season.
