Joe Maddon to the Angels is a Match Made in Heaven
By Parker White
After five seasons, Joe Maddon was let go by the Chicago Cubs with a World Series title under his belt. When you look at Maddon's resume, he can get any open managerial job he wants. So maybe it's time to come home?
On Monday, Maddon will interview with the Los Angeles Angels for their vacancy, and according to Jon Heyman of MLB Network, the interest is mutual.
If this is true, it appears that Maddon to the Angels is a done deal and it makes all the sense in the world.
Not only will Maddon get to manage the best player in the game in Mike Trout, but this is where it all started for the veteran skipper, who spent 31 years with the Angels organization from 1975-2005.
As for Trout, this ought to be a dream come true. The former MVP has long been considered the best player in baseball, but his lack of postseason at-bats is a scar on his resume, even if not completely his fault. Maddon succeeds at getting the most out of the talent on the roster, and the Angels enter the offseason ready to spend on top free agents (perhaps even Gerrit Cole).
Maddon learned under Mike Scioscia, who is an icon for the Angels. The 65-year-old brings this team the type of creativity and ingenuity they've lacked for many years, especially in the pitching department.
Oh, and doesn't his personality fit Southern California? Maddon and Angels GM Billy Eppler can share a bottle of wine to celebrate.
