Tom Brady is following in the footsteps of Joe Montana by finishing a historic career with a new team. Montana spent his final two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs after winning four Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers.

The NFL legend was asked about Brady leaving the New England Patriots and had some strong words for that organization. His comments come off as a bit shortsighted.

The first criticism of Montana's comment is that Brady may have just wanted to leave on his own. Montana is likely looking at it through the lens of his own career where he was pushed out of San Francisco because of Steve Young's success. Ye the situation in New England is different.

Brady will be 43 years old when the 2020 season begins. The Patriots need to focus on the future and finding a quarterback who could be around for the next decade. One bad year without Brady could lead to another great run by the team. Sticking with the legend would have delayed the inevitable and based on last season, Brady is starting to decline.

Montana retired before he even reached the age of 40. He was pushed out because his backup was a star. The Patriots have moved on from Brady due to his age and to get a bit of a restart before bottoming out with the veteran quarterback.

Just like any Patriots fan, Montana wanted Brady to get one more shot of glory with the team. Forgive us for putting our faith in Bill Belichick instead.
