Joe Theismann Pays Tribute to Fallen Former Redskins Offensive Line Coach Joe Bugel

The Washington Redskins shared sad news Sunday in that former coach Joe Bugel had passed away at the age of 80. He ran the offensive line from 1981-1989 and then again from 2004-2009.

Bugel was best known for his line he nicknamed "The Hogs." The dominance up front helped the Redskins win two Super Bowls in the 1980s. One of those was with Joe Theismann at quarterback and the legendary signal-caller shared his condolences after Bugel's passing.

Joe Bugel was a friend as much as a coach. For those of us who had the privilege to know him we were blessed. He’ll have the best Oline in heaven. RIP Joe

Theismann is 70 years old himself, making him close in age with Bugel. The two worked together on a great offense and the quarterback won his only MVP award with Bugel on the staff.

Theismann's words are touching and it shows the impact Bugel had both on and off the field. The offensive line guru even spent five years as a head coach in the NFL, but never had a winning season with the Phoenix Cardinals or the Oakland Raiders. That never tarnished his legacy and it shows given the tributes being shared on social media.
