John Henry Attempting to Compare Mookie Betts-Red Sox Situation to Bryce Harper and Nationals is Laughable
By Jerry Trotta
It's getting to the point where we're convinced that the Boston Red Sox are purposely trying to make a joke of themselves.
Hours would be needed to comprehensively detail the organization's almost comical offseason, and fans in Beantown can go right ahead and add the latest comments from owner John Henry to the laundry list of miscalculations.
Henry actually correlated the Red Sox' chances of winning after offloading Mookie Betts to the Washing Nationals capturing a World Series crown the season after losing Bryce Harper to free agency.
You've got to be kidding me.
The Nationals already had one of the MLB's best starting rotations before losing Harper. Pitching shines brightest in October, and Boston's assortment of hurlers was one of the worst in the league. In addition to already flaunting Max Scherzer, Stephen Strasburg and Patrick Corbin, Washington also had Anthony Rendon, Juan Soto, Trea Turner, Adam Eaton, Howie Kendrick and a rejuvenated Ryan Zimmerman. The situations are entirely different. Soto essentially filled in for Bryant -- the Red Sox don't have any such player that can do that in the wake of Betts' departure.
To make the Red Sox' current predicament all the more sad, Henry published a statement to fans essentially apologizing for the crazier-than-expected offseason, focusing predominantly on trading Betts.
It's difficult to bring ourselves to sympathize with a city that wins as much as Boston, but this is borderline pathetic from the Red Sox.
There's still a month left until the regular season so Boston has a ton of time to leave us dumbfounded, but Henry's statement serves as a perfect capper to the franchise's countless missteps this winter.
