John Lynch Refusing to Bolster 49ers Roster With Cost-Effective Additions On Display With Brian Hoyer-Pats Deal
By Michael Luciano

After a 2019 season in which they could do no wrong, John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan and the San Francisco 49ers have struggled during the 2020 offseason, as they are either incapable of or unwilling to fill out their roster with backups.
The New England Patriots just agreed to terms with former 49ers quarterback Brian Hoyer, depriving San Francisco of the change to give Jimmy Garoppolo a perfect high-end backup.

Lynch hasn't really come up with a very clear plan for how he wants to conduct the 2020 offseason. Did he want to go shopping at the bargain bin to find backups and depth pieces? Not really, because the likes of Hoyer and any of the dozens of defensive backs that have signed over the last few days haven't gone anywhere near San Francisco.
Has he been saving up and trying to land some of the big-fish free agents or retain his starters? Again, not really, as evidenced by the fact he had a Pro Bowl defensive tackle in DeForest Buckner, but traded him to the Indianapolis Colts for a pick that will likely be used on a defensive tackle.

Lynch might have built a Super Bowl team, but Les Snead will tell you that sustaining it is as important as building it up, if not more so. The 49ers will be in Super Bowl contention once again next year, but this roster has some holes thanks to Lynch's wheeling and non-dealing.
