Johnathan Cyprien Would be Perfect Addition for Eagles Amid Malcolm Jenkins' Holdout
By Jerry Trotta
The last we heard from Malcolm Jenkins came in the first week of May, when the veteran cornerback was a reported no-show to the Philadelphia Eagles voluntary workouts. Fast forward a month later to June 4, however, and the undisputed leader of Philly's defense is still away from the team.
Though it remains to be seen and reported if the 31-year-old Jenkins is seeking a new-and-improved contract, most skeptics are assuming that to be the case.
In the meantime, though, the Eagles should absolutely sign former Jaguars and Titans safety Johnathan Cyprien, whom the franchise is scheduled to bring in for a visit and workout on Tuesday.
Cyprien, a former second-round pick in 2013 (No. 33 overall), played four seasons in Jacksonville and one season in Tennessee before tearing his ACL in Titans training camp last year.
In those four seasons, the Florida International product has displayed his raw nose for the ball, compiling 506 tackles (377 solo), 16 pass deflections, a pair of interceptions and 12 tackles for loss.
Additionally, Cyprien (6-foot-1, 211 pounds) has a similar build to that of Jenkins (6-foot, 204 pounds), meaning that the 28-year-old could line up as a hybrid outside linebacker in specific packages -- something Jenkins is known to do within the Eagles' defensive schemes.
When you couple the fact that Jenkins isn't planning on reporting anytime soon with the current bereft safety market, the Eagles bringing aboard Cyprien should be a no-brainer.
