Jose Canseco Defends Mike Fiers Against Criticism From David Ortiz Because Baseball is Weird
Oakland's Mike Fiers put his reputation on the line by playing the role of whistleblower for the Houston Astros' infamous cheating scandal. That has earned him both praise and scorn from those around the MLB world.
Boston Red Sox legend David Ortiz had an odd reaction to Fiers' actions, calling him a "snitch" who was content to win a World Series ring with Houston before turning around and calling them out rather than blowing the whistle during the 2017 season. That earned Big Papi some criticism, and Fiers was later defended by Jose Canseco, of all people.
Canseco has earned a reputation for being "out there" in retirement, and it must be said that he was one of the more well-known cheaters in all of baseball when it came to the use of performane-enhancing drugs. He was not stealing signs with the help of electronic devices, of course, and applauded Fiers for telling the truth -- while also implying Ortiz generally gets let off the hook for being linked to PEDs himself.
To recap, one of baseball's most notorious PED users called out a legend of the game for calling a current player a snitch for helping to expose his former team's cheating ways. Canseco has certainly said some wild stuff since he left the game in 2001, but it is hard to argue against him for sticking up for Fiers in the face of questionable criticism.
