Josh Donaldson Just Did Something to the Mets That Even Chipper Jones Never Could
By Sean Facey
Josh Donaldson has been one of the most underrated signings by any team this offseason. The former AL MVP joined the Atlanta Braves on a one-year, $23 million deal, and has hit to the tune of a .904 OPS.
But in terms of killing the Mets, he's doing things that even Hall of Fame third baseman Chipper Jones never could. Donaldson has ruthlessly tormented Atlanta's division rival that resides in Flushing this year by hitting nine home runs against them, the most by any Braves player since Dave Kingman back in 1979.
Considering Jones managed a .949 OPS and 49 career home runs against the Mets, that's ridiculously impressive.
Then again, it's been a ridiculously impressive year as a whole for Donaldson. He didn't receive much interest in the offseason due to injury concerns, hence the reason why the Braves brought him in on a lucrative "prove it" deal.
During his short tenure, Donaldson's done plenty to prove that he's still got some pop in his bat. Thanks in part to his systematic dismantling of the Mets, including a two-homer performance on Sunday, he's now at 32 home runs on the year, his fourth-most in a season since he debuted back in 2010.
Donaldson has given the fans in Atlanta a fireworks show at the third base position that they haven't seen since Jones retired back in 2012
And with three games still left to play against the Mets this year, he still has a chance to put even more distance between himself and the franchise icon.
