3 Contenders That Absolutely Need to Sign Josh Donaldson

The Josh Donaldson free agent market figures to be one of the robust in the 2019-20 MLB offseason, as the 32-year-old third baseman is coming off a year in which he slugged 37 long balls on an Atlanta Braves team that won the NL East. Donaldson is going to have his pick of nine-figure salaries to choose from, and these three teams should at least throw their hat in the ring for his services.

3. New York Mets

The Mets have a perfect opportunity to pull off a heist in free agency this year. With JD Davis emerging as both a solid middle of the order bat and a decent defensive outfielder, the Mets could bring Donaldson into town and stick him over at third, which would give the Mets a Donaldson/Pete Alonso/Davis middle of the order. You need to make a splash when you arrive in New York, and Carlos Beltran's first year could be one to remember if they add a player like Donaldson at third base.

2. Philadelphia Phillies

The Phillies thought that third base was solved for years to come with Maikel Franco manning the hot corner, but his sudden demotion to Triple-A last year proves that Philly will need to upgrade that position to stand a chance in a suddenly crowded NL East. Joe Girardi saw Donaldson destroy his Yankees in the AL East for three seasons, so he knows just as well as anyone how dominant the former MVP can be. If Matt Klentak feels ready to spend again, Donaldson could link up with Bryce Harper in Philly.

1. Milwaukee Brewers

The Brewers infield could undergo a major facelift this offseason, as Mike Moustakas is an impending free agent. Why not replace a slugging third baseman with an even better slugging third baseman who can actually play defense? If Christian Yelich is back to his MVP form, Donaldson mans the cleanup spot, and top prospect Keston Hiura continues to rake, Milwaukee should be considered the favorites in the NL Central.
