3 Teams Who Shouldn't Think Twice and Sign Josh Gordon
By Jerry Trotta
The latest buzz suggests that Josh Gordon is eyeing another NFL return as he works his way back from an indefinite suspension. Of course, the free agent wide receiver spent time with the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks in 2019 before he was suspended in December for violating the league's substance abuse policy.
Gordon obviously comes with a mountain of baggage, but as evidenced in flashes last season, he still boasts the physical tools to be a productive NFL player. With this in mind, here are three wideout-needy teams that shouldn't think twice about signing the former All-Pro.
3. Philadelphia Eagles
After offseason speculation hinted that the Philadelphia Eagles were thinking about trading Alshon Jeffery, it now appears that the 30-year-old vet will spend at least the 2020 season with the franchise. While that's great news for the Eagles, it still doesn't fix their glaring lack of depth at the position. On top of that, both Jeffery and DeSean Jackson are fresh off injury-riddled campaigns, and there's also no way to know if No. 21 overall pick Jalen Reagor will make a seamless transition to the NFL as a rookie. Taking all of those concerns into consideration, Philadelphia would be wholly justified in taking a flier on Gordon.
2. Green Bay Packers
What the Green Bay Packers failed to do in the 2020 Draft, they could go a long way in making up for by signing Gordon. After all, the team is alarmingly thin at the wide receiver position behind perennial stud Davante Adams, who's compiled 4,265 and 40 touchdowns across the last four seasons. A starting trio of Adams, offseason signee Devin Funchess and Gordon would be markedly better than what Green Bay rolled out at wideout last season. Aaron Rodgers is desperate for a vertical threat, and Gordon is still one of the most dangerous pass-catchers in that aspect in the entire NFL.
1. Seattle Seahawks
Rumor has it that the Seahawks have been inquiring about the eligibility of Antonio Brown. In our eyes, that would be a monumental mistake. Sure, Gordon's history is anything but reassuring, but he wouldn't incite chaos in Seattle's locker room. The 29-year-old is a reserved player, whereas Brown is an obnoxious loudmouth with no filter. More importantly, Gordon is familiar with the Seahawks' system after playing five games for them in 2019. A receiving corps that features the likes of Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, Gordon and Philip Dorsett would be one of the most dynamic in the NFL, and that's indisputable. There is no better fit for the former Pro Bowler than the Emerald City.
