3 Bold Predictions for Andy Ruiz vs Anthony Joshua 2
By Michael Luciano
After stunning the world my not only beating Anthony Joshua via TKO -- but also dominating the latter stages of their first fight in general -- Andy Ruiz Jr. will look to take down Joshua once more as the pair are set for a rematch this Saturday in Saudi Arabia for the world heavyweight championship. AJ is shouldering almost all of the pressure, as two straight losses to Ruiz could mean the proper end of his ability to claim "best heavyweight in the world" status. With that in mind, given things could get even more unexpected the second time around, it's time to make three prognostications for the "Clash on the Dunes."
3. Ruiz Lands More Punches Than Joshua
While most opponents have stood back in fear of Joshua, who cuts the figure of a Greek statue, Ruiz went right after him, throwing and landing more power punches when they first met. If Ruiz and his 74-inch reach sit back and box overly patiently, Joshua and his 82-inch reach will jab Ruiz to death over the course of the fight. Expect the champ will get right in AJ's grill and unload on him, as being reactive and letting the bigger man control the tempo is essentially gifting him a win.
2. Ruiz Tires Early, Gets Knocked Down Within First 3 Rounds
In keeping with the Destroyer's tendency to come out as the aggressor, such a plan could backfire if his conditioning isn't up to snuff. Coming out guns blazing against someone with the punching power and mobility of Joshua would lead to an increased risk of getting knocked down, as one glancing left hook could be enough to send Ruiz tumbling to the mat. If Joshua smells blood in the water, you can bet he's going to take advantage -- and remember, he put Ruiz on the canvas first back in June.
1. AJ Knocks Ruiz Out Before Round 7
Joshua had the height and reach advantage in June, but was strangely passive against Ruiz, especially in the middle rounds. Once Ruiz flustered AJ by catching him on his ear and knocking him down, it was over. Joshua has all the physical talent in the world, and he's smart enough to realize that his approach against Ruiz the first time around is not going to get it done. If he can keep Ruiz at bay with jabs before unloading on him in the middle rounds, one of those patented right hooks is going to connect sooner or later -- and it should put the unlikely champ out of commission.
