Justin Verlander's Latest Pitching Achievement Puts Him in Elite Company With Randy Johnson
By Jerry Trotta
At 36 years old, Justin Verlander just continues to baffle us with his dominance on the mound. The former AL MVP has added 15 more wins to his prestigious resume in 2019 with over a month still left to go in the regular season.
And, to virtually nobody's surprise, the vet right-hander was delivering more of the goods in his latest start for the Houston Astros on Friday. His imposing outing was even complimented by joining some elite Randy Johnson company. JV became the oldest pitcher since the Big Unit to record 10 or more strikeouts in six straight games.
What more is there to say about this dude?
The former Cy Young's line for the night was remarkable: 7 innings, 4 hits, 2 runs, 0 walks and 11 strikeouts. Unfortunately, two of the four hits he conceded were solo home runs, tainting an otherwise flawless outing.
If that doesn't perfectly summarize the eight-time All-Star's Hall-of-Fame resume, we don't know what does. He (somehow) is getting better with age. Dare we say like a fine wine?
Getting your name ingrained with a pitcher of Johnson's caliber is obviously no small feat. Take a bow, Verlander.
