Juwan Howard and Michigan Get Dose of Reality With Isaiah Todd and Josh Christopher Decisions
By Mark Powell
Year one under Juwan Howard in Ann Arbor seemed like a fairy tale, with Michigan a potential tournament contender behind a roster constructed by Jon Beilein, but molded together by the former Fab Five member.
With leader Zavier Simpson leaving without one final NCAA Tournament appearance, the Wolverines have a lot of holes to fill. This was expected to be taken care of thanks to a loaded recruiting class Howard put together, previously ranked fourth in the entire country and first in the Big Ten.
But, how quickly things can change in just 12 hours.
Josh Christopher chose Arizona State over the favored Wolverines in a surprising decision, but one that was acceptable for Michigan faithful due to their already-loaded treasure chest of prospects. On Tuesday, Isaiah Todd opted to take his talents elsewhere (likely overseas) to pursue a professional career rather than spend his first year of eligibility in the college ranks.
While we respect his choice, it's a huge hit to the confidence of Michigan fans who previously expected large accomplishments from the 2020 recruiting class.
In response, Howard better run to the phone to check on the status of Zeb Jackson, the only 5-star recruit remaining in Michigan's 2020 class. Jackson has signed his letter of intent, and now his development becomes even more vital to the program Howard is trying to build in Ann Arbor.
Indeed, 4-star talents Hunter Dickinson and Terrance Williams remain at Howard's disposal for now, but it remains to be seen what the young coach will do with his now available roster spots for the 2020-21 season, assuming it takes place at all.
