Chiefs Owner Clark Hunt Reveals Timeline for Patrick Mahomes Contract Extension Negotiations

The football world is preoccupied at the moment with the never-ending contract negotiation standoff between the Dallas Cowboys and quarterback Dak Prescott. But the next quarterback set to earn a new contract after Prescott, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs, stands to sign a deal that makes even bigger headlines do to the near certainty that it sets an all-time record -- and we now have a date set for when those talks will properly begin.

During an appearance on 105.3 The Fan sports radio in Dallas on Thursday, Chiefs owner Clark Hunt says that the team will kick off extension negotiations with the Super Bowl MVP this summer.

“The negotiations are something we’ll be getting into this summer,” Hunt said. “But what he has said and what we’ve said, both sides, is he wants to be a Kansas City Chief for life, and that’s our mentality as well. We want him to play his entire career in Kansas City, and that’s what we’re going to be shooting for.”

Mahomes is entering the fourth year of his rookie contract, on which he's earning an extremely humble $825,000 base salary. But if the two sides can't reach an agreement on a new deal, Mahomes is set to make an estimatd $24.8 million in 2021 on the fifth-year option included in his current contract given his status as a former top-10 pick.

In just three years, Mahomes has solidified himself as one of the great NFL quarterbacks in recent memory, and a premier star in the league. In his first season as a starter in 2018, he won the NFL MVP. This past year, Mahomes led the Chiefs to a Super Bowl LIV victory, nabbing game MVP honors and instant all-time status in Chiefs history.

In his career to date, Mahomes has completed 65.9% of his passes for 9,412 yards, 76 touchdowns, and 18 interceptions.

While Hunt says negotiations will begin place this summer, it's likely that Mahomes will sit back and wait to see how much Prescott will make with the Cowboys (or another team!). Prescott has earned the right to issue major financial demands on his next deal, but it's expected that Mahomes will blow his contract out of the water, and deservedly so.
