Former Clemson Player Says Dabo Swinney Allegedly Covered for Assistant Who Used Racial Epithet in Practice
By Jerry Trotta
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has been subjected to criticism following his reluctance to respond to the death of George Floyd, which has sparked civil unrest in the form of protests across the nation. To make matters worse, the Tigers boss' justification for remaining silent in the immediate aftermath was the epitome of weak as he claimed he didn't want to be the "first" to come forward.
Unfortunately for Swinney, the water he has found himself in over the last few days is still very much boiling.
Former Clemson wide receiver Kanyon Tuttle called the two-time national champion out on Twitter for allegedly failing to discipline an assistant who uttered a racial slur during practice. Tuttle slammed Swinney for not issuing an apology to the team and "protecting his brand."
A natural response to accusations as damning as the one's made by Tuttle would be to say that one player coming forward doesn't confirm anything. Well, former Tigers center Zach Giella backed Tuttle's recollection by stating the moment is imprinted in his memory as if it happened yesterday.
You have to assume that it's only a matter of time until the identity of Clemson assistant who uttered the offensive epithet is revealed. Clemson will surely look further into this development, so stay tuned for updates on that front.
As for Swinney, well, he had better start preparing a statement.
