Keith Law Calls Out Blue Jays Official for Perceived Racist Remark After Marcus Stroman Trade
By Michael Luciano
Former ESPN baseball analyst Keith Law is taking aim at an unnamed Toronto Blue Jays official over a comment that he perceived as racist.
Following the trade of Marcus Stroman to the New York Mets, an unnamed official with the Jays accused Stroman of being too "comfortable" and "thinking he was the veteran," while saying that he'll fit right in on a team in which he'll play second fiddle to Jacob deGrom and Noah Syndergaard. While the statement is ridiculous (Stroman WAS the veteran of that Blue Jays team), Law took it a step further, calling the remark racist.
Condescending? Absolutely. Lazy in their analysis of Stroman's tenure as a Blue Jay? Certainly. Racist? Some seem to think so.
According to Law, that whole diatribe was coded language that scolded an African-American player for being the vocal leader of a baseball team. It's still up for debate if that is what the official meant, but the possibility can't be ignored.
Considering that Stroman was a veteran, leader, and an all-around well-respected player both on his team and around the league, this does have a sort of "know your place" feel to it that makes it a bit unnerving.
If Stroman came into contact with this official often, at least he'll be with an organization that will value his contributions in the clubhouse more in New York.
