Khabib Nurmagomedov has been stuck in his native Russia ever since the global COVID-19 shutdowns took hold, and was famously unable to defend his UFC lightweight championship against Tony Ferguson at UFC 249. Now, however, the Octagon is the last thing on his mind, as a health scare has struck his family in the worst way.
Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, Khabib's father and trainer, is comatose and in critical condition according to reports in Russian media Wednesday.
Khabib himself confirmed during an Instagram Live video with fellow fighter and countryman Islam Makachev that Abdulmanap was hospitalized in Moscow and that his condition had worsened. He was reportedly transferred to a Moscow facility after a round of treatment for pneumonia in his native Dagestan was unsuccessful.
Abdulmanap is one of the architects of his son's success, first as a champion on combat sambo and subsequently in the UFC, where he has become one of MMA's biggest global stars and an all-time figure in the 155-pound division.
A report from Sport Express on Wednesday indicated that family members are currently not able to visit him in Moscow.
This is a scary time for so many around the world, and we send our very best to Khabib and his family as their patriarch deals with these dire circumstance.
