VIDEO: Khabib's Cousin Abubakar Nurmagomedov Suffers Upset Defeat at UFC Moscow by Submission
By Sam Dunn
Take a bow, David Zawada! Fight fans' eyes were curiously trained on one of the biggest surnames in the game Saturday at UFC Fight Night in Moscow as Abubakar Nurmagomedov, cousin of lightweight champ Khabib, took on David Zawada. The pressure ultimately outweighed the prestige, however, as Zawada scored a surprise first-round victory via a brilliantly executed triangle choke submission.
The Nurmagomedov name is synonymous with grappling and takedowns. Seeing the kid lose like this has got to be devastating. Right on cue, Khabib was seen consoling his cousin following the fight.
Abubakar was anywhere from a -280 to -325 favorite heading into the fight, so all due credit goes to "Sagat" Zawada, a 29-year-old German native who must have felt he wasn't fighting for much more than merely UFC relevance. Now, he's got a proper feather in his cap.
