Kings' Tweet Complaining About ESPN's All-Time Top 74 NBA Players List Erases Oscar Robertson From Existence
By Sam Dunn
Basketball squabbles have suddenly evolved far beyond MJ vs. LeBron, folks. ESPN has sated our appetites for feverish debate by debuting a list of the top 74 players in NBA history, and we dare you to keep your mouth shut for more than a minute after seeing the exact order in which Kevin Garnett, Dirk Nowitzki, and Tim Duncan checked in. But we're not going to talk about that today; instead, let's had the mic to the Sacramento Kings, who are sad that not a single one of their players made the holy 74 (yes, Chris Webber was snubbed here just like he's been snubbed from the Hall of Fame).
But hey, wait a minute, what about Oscar Freaking Robertson?
Robertson, one of the greatest players in basketball history by any measure, ranks 11th on this vaunted list. That sounds about right. And yes, he never wore a uniform that said "Kings" on it, but let's be clear: The team with which he spent most of his career, the Cincinnati Royals, is the same franchise that currently resides in SacTown. They just moved and re-branded, with a stop in Kansas City in between.
Sheesh, they even retired Oscar's No. 14 jersey. It's hanging from the rafters at their damn arena.
"The Big O" is frustratingly forgotten in way too many discussions about the greatest to ever play the game for reasons that are absolutely not his fault. He was a Cincy guy before finishing his career with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's Milwaukee Bucks, 'tis true, but to erase him from the franchise history of the Sacramento Kings is just wrong.
