Korean Baseball Team Playing in Masks is Strange and Frightening to See
By Brady Williams
We're living in one of the strangest times in sports history. The COVID-19 pandemic has halted all major sports leagues in the United States for the time being, but it seems South Korea is a little more willing to move forward.
The Lotte Giants played an instasquad game this week before an empty crowd, and some of the players were wearing masks while on the field. Is this what fans can expect moving forward?
The Giants play in South Korea, which has been one of the more successful countries in "flattening the curve" since the virus began to spread. However, things are still far from safe and even farther from normal. The sight of professional athletes in masks playing in an empty ballpark is nothing short of eerie.
It's just an indication of how out of sorts the world is right now. The circumstances are certainly unique, but this could become a more regular thing if more teams begin playing during the dangerous outbreak.
A new agreement between Major League Baseball and its players has outlined the terms if baseball doesn't make a comeback. However, with Rob Manfred telling ESPN's Scott Van Pelt "nothing's off the table" with regards to the return of play, it's possible we could be seeing something like this in the U.S. in the near future. It'd simply be strange to see.
