Kyle Schwarber Heating up for Cubs Means They Might Finally Have a Leadoff Hitter
By Sean Facey
After a slow first week, perhaps the one true weakness the resurgent Chicago Cubs' offense took with them was the leadoff spot. Despite experimentation, they repeatedly failed to find consistent production from one of the most integral positions in the order.
Kyle Schwarber's recent outburst, though, might just be the key to solving their leadoff hitter woes.
Since he moved into the top spot in the order in the middle of May, he's posted a .911 OPS in 106 plate appearances. He's given the Cubs the offense right out of the gate that they've been missing.
He's been even better over his last seven games, going 11-for-26 out of the leadoff spot with two home runs and an absurd 1.269 OPS.
Schwarber provides both pop and production the likes of which have become increasingly expected of leadoff hitters lately. He's also striking out less and getting on base with greater frequency than he has in recent years.
The Cubs have been without their true leadoff man in Ben Zobrist since he left the team to deal with personal matters early in the season.
In Zobrist's absence, Joe Maddon has had to roll out the likes of Jayson Heyward and Daniel Descalso to open things up this year. Having the newfound option of Schwarber is a breath of fresh air.
So long as Schwarber continues to produce, the Cubs will have finally found their guy to kick things off atop the batting order.
