Nets Players Blast Media for 'Making up' Kyrie Irving's Suggestion of Starting a New Basketball League
By Jerry Trotta
It's pretty clear that Kyrie Irving wants absolutely nothing to do with the NBA's restart plan that's set to kick off at Walt Disney World next month.
However, basketball fans couldn't help but scratch their heads when Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News reported on Tuesday night that the Brooklyn Nets point guard brought up the idea of creating a new league in text conversations with his teammates.
Irving certainly tends to zig when everyone else is zagging, but this particular suggestion is beyond outlandish, even for his standards. As a result, some of his Nets teammates came to his defense on Twitter by loudly refuting the report. Backup point guard Chris Chiozza was the first to do so.
Irving doesn't have a great reputation as a locker room guy, but the fact that his teammates are defending him to this extent says a lot about the validity, or lack thereof, of the report. Fellow backcourt mate Theo Pinson followed Chiozza's lead by calling the bombshell "fake news."
Not only did Nets players throw water on the rumor, but so did Bleacher Report's Taylor Rooks, who says that the six-time All-Star left the Nets group chat after all of this was reported.
Based on these spirited responses, it would appear that the Daily News' intel wasn't entirely accurate here. Like we said earlier, Irving enjoys being different, but we're not so sure that he would advocate for something as ludicrous as starting a new league, and his teammates are making sure the chatter ends here.
