JR Smith Reportedly Working Out for Lakers This Week
By Jerry Trotta
After Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Sunday that the Los Angeles Lakers agreed to mutually part ways with guard Troy Daniels, NBA Twitter was sent into a frenzy, pondering who the organization would sign to fill the roster spot.
Well, it would appear that the wishes of basketball diehards have been granted.
Per insider Shams Charania, the Lakers are expected to hold a workout for free agent guard JR Smith this week.
Inject a reunion between LeBron James and JR right into our veins, please.
Of course, this report doesn't confirm anything considering the Lakers are also expected to welcome Dion Waiters in for a workout on Monday. If there's an advantage to be had between the veteran guards, it clearly lies with Smith's ties to LeBron.
The two famously played together in Cleveland from 2014 until 2018 before James darted for Los Angeles.
The Lakers are clearly looking to add another 3-point shooter, and prior to a lost season with the Cavaliers this year, Smith was a true marksman. In the four seasons up until 2019, the former Sixth Man of the Year shot the three at a 37.9% clip.
The buyout market is presently bereft, and it's sure looking like the Lakers will have to choose between Waiters and Smith as the team looks to add one final piece in preparation for a championship run.
