Every year, Hall of Fame inductions are one of the most touching moments in sports. This year, Larry Walker will understand the magic of Cooperstown when the former MVP is officially enshrined. Walker, a native Canadian, played his first five seasons with the Montreal Expos before making the move to the States in 1995 to join the Colorado Rockies, where he spent nine years. He only played 1.5 years with the Cardinals from 2004 to 2005, but in his brief time there he developed a love for the organization.
"They opened their hearts and they're a first class organization," Walker said. "The fans are first class."
Walker was famously greeted by a standing ovation in his first at-bat at Busch Stadium. Cardinals fans rose to their feet when he came up to pinch hit against the New York Mets. When he struck out, they gave him another standing ovation as he walked back to the dugout!
"To start out my Cardinal career with that ovation and that love ... I tell you what, anybody would be out of their mind not to want to play for the Cardinals and put this uniform on," Walker said.
Walker was key addition to the 2004 Cardinals team that reached the World Series. His career accolades include being a five-time All Star, seven-time Gold Glove winner, three-time NL batting champion and the 1997 home run leader and NL MVP.
