Latest Buzz Suggests the Eagles Could Take a Stud Wide Receiver Early in 2020 NFL Draft
By Jerry Trotta
In truly puzzling fashion, the Philadelphia Eagles have yet to address their second-rate wide receiving corps this offseason. General manager Howie Roseman has passed on a handful of elite players that have since found new homes via trade or in free agency, but there may just be a method to his madness.
The latest NFL buzz suggests that the Eagles could be plotting to select one of the top receivers in the 2020 Draft, after patching their secondary up with Darius Slay.
Philadelphia reportedly inquired about the WR market several times last week, but the team ultimately determined that it would prefer a drafting a younger player rather than a veteran who might clash with quarterback Carson Wentz's style of play.
The Eagles' reported intentions indicate that the franchise doesn't want to make the same mistake it did with Alshon Jeffery, who's yet to establish a rapport with Wentz in his three seasons with Philly. After an injury-riddled 2019 campaign, Jeffery is now reported to be demanding a trade.
It goes without saying that the incoming WR class is loaded, but the Eagles may need to trade up from No. 21 if they want to snag one of the top dogs. Mel Kiper's latest mock draft has Philadelphia taking former LSU star Justin Jefferson in the first round. The Eagles may be content with Jefferson, but it's worth noting that Kiper had the likes of Jerry Jeudy, Henry Ruggs, Cee Dee Lamb, and Tee Higgins getting drafted beforehand.
There's plenty for Roseman to sort out here, and he will likely have plenty of time do so, as the coronavirus outbreak could force the NFL to postpone the draft, despite their best intentions.
