Latest Jason Varitek Update Should Make Red Sox Fans Optimistic
By Jerry Trotta
It's been surprisingly quiet on the Boston Red Sox front in regards to their pursuit of a new skipper. Of course, the organization was forced to part ways with Alex Cora after the damning details of his involvement in the Houston Astros' (and Red Sox) sign-stealing scandals were made public last week.
Club legend Jason Varitek has been linked to the vacancy, but those rumors never truly gained much traction due to his indifference about managing.
Well, MLB insider Jon Heyman is reporting that Varitek has endured a change of heart and would consider answering the phone if Boston came calling.
This report should sit wonderfully with fans in Beantown. Given the turmoil surrounding their organization after being unmasked by The Athletic, they would absolutely rally behind a city icon like Varitek.
It goes without saying that Red Sox aficionados are fault-finders, but they would certainly permit Varitek the time necessary to work through the growing pains that come with being a first-time skipper.
Given the lack of qualified candidates on the market (and within their organization), Boston should, at the very least, bring Varitek in for an interview. What's the harm in that?
