Latest Update on Trent Williams Suggests His Redskins Days Are Over
Trent Williams has been with the Washington Redskins since 2010 when he was drafted No. 4 overall out of Oklahoma. He went to the Pro Bowl every year from 2012-2018 before things went south in 2019.
Williams did not appear in a single game last season due to offseason health issues which resulted in a lack of trust in the team's medical staff. That made him a trade candidate all year, despite being under contract for 2020. Yet, his dead cap is only $2 million for the upcoming campaign, and a recent update points to the Redskins potentially moving on from the former All-Pro.
The damage was done in the relationship last year. Even the ousting of Jay Gruden paired with the addition of Ron Rivera doesn't appear to be enough to keep Williams in town.
Despite sitting out last season, Williams is demanding to get paid. When healthy and on the field, the 31-year-old is among the game's best offensive linemen, and he wants his new deal to reflect that. If the Redskins aren't willing to offer that, he'll be seeking a trade.
Williams will be 32 years old when the season begins. That alone is enough motivation for the Redskins to not offer him a massive extension. The bad relationship is the ultimate problem here and letting the left tackle sign elsewhere may be better than him staying and sitting out.
