LeBron James Shoots Down Idea of Canceled NBA Season With Defiant Tweet
By Scott Rogust
NBA fans continue to wait and wonder about how the league might be able to return during the current coronavirus pandemic. The reports keep getting more creative, with the suggestion that the 2019-20 season could actually resume at Walt Disney World standing out among them. However, there is notable buzz among some executives and coaches about potentially calling off the rest of the season entirely.
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James swiftly shut down that notion in a tweet on Thursday. James says that all the insiders he's spoken to want the season to commence once it's safe to return to normalcy, and that he just won't entertain the possibility of calling it quits on the 2019-20 campaign.
We shouldn't be surprised by this statement. James is an absolute competitor and wants to finish what he started this season. He was on pace to lead the Lakers to the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference, and wasn't so far behind Giannis Antetokounmpo in the MVP race. Why would he want things to end just like that?
Although cancelation isn't an option for LeBron, he might need to be realistic in his thinking, of course.
There's still so much uncertainty surrounding the spread and containment of COVID-19. There's not enough testing in the United States to allow everyone to return to their daily routines, and the creation of a vaccine is likely no less than a year away. It's expected that the virus will return in a second wave this winter, so we're far from out of the woods.
Silver has said that he'll reopen the league once public health officials give him the thumbs up. It's unknown when that might come, but James is confident that it can happen eventually. It's wishful thinking from the NBA superstar, but it's hard to fault him for it.
