A Kemar Roofe goal in the 55th minute gave Leeds a 1-0 win in the first leg at iPro Stadium, enough to return home with the one-goal aggregate advantage. The fact that the goal was scored away also makes life easier for the Peacocks.

Leeds and Derby qualified for the playoff by finishing in third and sixth place, respectively, in the English Football League Championship, the second division of English football behind the Premier League. Each year, the top two teams in the EFL Championship qualify for direct EPL promotion, while the final spot in the premiership is awarded to the winner of a four-team playoff between teams 3-6 in the table.

Derby County, managed by English footballing legend Frank Lampard, were last in the top flight in the 2007-08 season, finishing 20th. Meanwhile, Leeds would love nothing more than to return to the league they called home until 2004. A former English powerhouse, their relegation was sudden and shocking. They have won the first league three times in their history, most recently in 1991-92, the final season before the advent of the modern EPL.

Whoever advances in the two-leg tie will take on the winner of the West Bromwich-Aston Villa semifinal, with Aston Villa currently leading the West Midlands Derby 2-1 after one leg. The final of the promotion playoff is played as a single match on May 27 at Wembley Stadium.
