LeSean McCoy Expected to Be Inactive for Chiefs in Super Bowl vs 49ers
By Jackson Thompson
LeSean McCoy has never played in the Super Bowl during his 11-year NFL career, a streak that might continue despite being on the Chiefs, who will be playing in Sunday's championship game.
The 31-year-old McCoy might be inactive once again for the Chiefs on Sunday against the 49ers, according to Ian Rapoport. The team is reportedly considering using McCoy's roster spot to create some extra depth on the defensive line.
It would be the second game in a row of inactivity for McCoy, as he was also inactive for the Chiefs' AFC Championship clash against the Tennessee Titans. He's only played one snap this postseason, which came during Kansas City's divisional round matchup against the Houston Texans.
McCoy had a career-worst season in his first year in Kansas City. He rushed for 465 yards, his lowest season rushing total ever, due in part to a career-low in carries with 101. He was cut by the Buffalo Bills in August, but signed a one-year deal to reunite with his old head coach Andy Reid in Kansas City for this season.
The Chiefs are likely to go with the backfield combination of Damien Williams and Darwin Thompson, leaving McCoy as the odd man out in KC's rushing attack on Sunday. Even though McCoy is unlikely to contribute to the Chiefs' efforts on Sunday, he expressed gratuity and pride in simply being a part of the game in some capacity.
McCoy will be a free agent at the end of the season, and despite turning 32 soon, he doesn't plan to call it a career just yet. However, he claims that when he does retire he will do so with the team that originally drafted him, the Philadelphia Eagles.
