There aren't many Oklahoma Sooners that had better college careers than Baker Mayfield. The 2017 Heisman Trophy winner will be honored by the Sooners at the team's spring game on April 18. Head coach Lincoln Riley told the media in a press conference on Monday that the program will unveil a statue in the stadium in his honor.
According to Riley, the statue will be unveiled inside the stadium, unlike most statue unveilings, which occur outside the stadium's boundaries. He said that the program wanted the whole crowd to be a part of the ceremony.
You'll be hard pressed to find a better Sooner than Mayfield in recent years. Mayfield became the first walk-on to ever win the Heisman Trophy, as he initially walked on at Texas Tech before transferring after the 2013 season.
For Oklahoma, Mayfield threw for 12,292 yards, 119 touchdowns, 21 interceptions, and a 69.8% completion percentage in his three seasons. In 2017, he brought the team to the Big 12 Championship after a six-year hiatus, as well as to the CFP Semifinal, the Rose Bowl.
Although his NFL career has yet to materialize into something great, his college career is unmatched, and he deserves a monument from the Oklahoma football program.
