This Lions-Chiefs Trade for Darius Slay Could Actually Work
By Scott Rogust
The Kansas City Chiefs are in the midst of a potential dynasty after winning Super Bowl LIV and seeing their main competition in the New England Patriots lose Tom Brady to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Entering the 2020 season, the Chiefs' championship window is wide open, especially with quarterback Patrick Mahomes on his rookie contract.
Even though they hoisted the Lombardi Trophy, the Chiefs need help at the cornerback position. Luckily for them, there's a big name on the market in Darius Slay. The cornerback has made it known that he wants off the Detroit Lions, given the organization's lack of desire to lock him into a long-term contract extension.
That works in the favor for the Chiefs, who look to put themselves over the edge next season. Considering that Slay is disgruntled, the Lions have officially lost all leverage in trade talks. Not only that, but the All-Pro defensive back is entering the final year of his current deal.
The Chiefs own just five picks in the upcoming NFL Draft, one in each of the first five rounds. To be frank, there's no way Kansas City sends their first or second round picks to Detroit. Instead, they can surrender their third (No. 96) and fifth (No. 177) to the Lions in exchange for Slay. It'd be a tough pill to swallow for the Chiefs, who lack much draft capital, but a necessary one if they hope to snag Slay.
Kansas City's pass defense was stout last season, where they surrendered just 221.4 air yards per game (eighth-best in NFL). But considering they want to add more Lombardi Trophies to their mantle, they need to make a move to put them over the edge. They don't even need to lock in Slay to a new contract. Just get him on the squad and go win another Super Bowl. It's as simple as that.
