3 Draft Day Trades the Lions Should Consider to Still Get the Top Talent They Need
By Scott Rogust
The Detroit Lions are in a prime position to select a stud college prospect with the third overall pick in this month's NFL Draft. However, the Lions have a plethora of needs on both sides of the ball, so trading down would greatly benefit them and help acquire more assets.
Here are three scenarios general manager Bob Quinn should at least consider on draft night.
3. Trade Down for K'Lavon Chiasson or Kenneth Murray
Jamie Collins is the new Lions starting linebacker, but he's not going to solve their defensive issues. However, if they get another stud to complement him, then things would get interesting. The wise move would be to take Clemson's Isaiah Simmons at No. 3, but what if a team in the middle of the first round makes an offer the Lions can't refuse (i.e. the Las Vegas Raiders)? Well, they'd still have some quality options in LSU's K'Lavon Chaisson and Oklahoma's Kenneth Murray, while also adding some much-needed draft capital in 2020 and 2021.
2. Move Down for Derrick Brown or Javon Kinlaw
The Lions defensive line is, on paper, pretty stacked. However, they took a bit of a hit at the defensive tackle position after releasing Damon "Snacks" Harrison. Even though the Lions added ex-New England Patriot Danny Shelton, it wouldn't hurt to put another stud in the trenches alongside him. As a result, the Lions should consider moving down to select either Auburn's Derrick Brown or South Carolina's Javon Kinlaw, both of whom project to be monster defensive tackles at the pro level.
1. Make a QB-Needy Team Trade up and Still Select Jeff Okudah
With teams like the Miami Dolphins and Los Angeles Chargers in need of a quarterback, the Lions can offer their No. 3 slot for a bevy of extra draft picks while not moving back too far. On top of that, they can still get the guy they're projected to at No. 3. Ohio State's Jeff Okudah is on a tier of his own compared to fellow defensive back prospects and would immediately slot in as a starter, especially after the loss of Darius Slay. Yes, they can take him with the third overall pick, but the Dolphins and Chargers are at Nos. 5 and 6. The Lions can easily move down 2-3 spots and still get him.
